LEXINGTON, Ky. (FOX 56) — A Lexington father who lost his son in a shooting in late October has a message for parents everywhere. Be curious and don’t be afraid to question your kid’s every move.
Sergio Arellano would give anything to have his 17-year-old son back, but he’ll have to settle for information about the crime that took him.
“I just comfort myself to say he’s still somewhere hanging with his friends and thinking I’m still going to see him again,” Arellano said. “But sometimes I just go, OK he’s not here anymore.”
Arellano remembers the phone call he got the night of Oct. 29 and the confusion when they later found Sergio Villarados passenger at the hospital suffering from a gunshot wound, but not the 17-year-old Villarados.
“His mom called me and said Maria is here, but not Sergio. What happened?”
The panicked father rushed to the scene off Price Road near the Lexington Cemetery and found a mangled car that had been in an accident. First responders said Sergio had died.
Since then, Mr. Arellano has been on a mission to find who killed his son. In the days after his death, dozens gathered for a vigil vowing to keep fighting for him.
“If you know me, you can reach me,” said Arellano. “No, you’re not a snitch. You’re helping somebody else before somebody else get killed. Because the guy who killed my son might kill somebody else.”
