A 29-year-old man is facing charges for attempted murder of Chicago police officers Friday night in University Village.

Nokomis Jefferson was arrested moments after he allegedly fired shots at officers in the 1300 block of West Hastings Street, Chicago police said.

About 10:45 p.m., 12th District officers approached two males who were allegedly showing handguns when Jefferson allegedly fired at the officers, police said. The officers returned fire, hitting one person.

The male was taken to a hospital with injuries that weren’t considered life-threatening, according to police. Jefferson left the scene on foot but was taken into custody shortly after.

Jefferson was charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder and one count each unlawful use of a weapon and county issuance of a warrant, police said.

He was expected to appear in bond court Sunday.
