A mid-December double-homicide near Woodruff in southern Spartanburg County remains an apparent mystery 16 years later.

On Dec. 14, 2005, a friend found Donnie Miller Jr., 16, and Mardell Hunter Jr. , 43, shot to death in the back room of a mobile home near Woodruff.

The double-murder victims were friends, and one of them lived at the 868 Miller Road residence, investigators said at the time.

Donnie Miller Jr., left, and Mardell Hunter Jr. were found shot to death in a mobile home near Woodruff on Dec. 14, 2005. To this day, the case remains unsolved.

Spartanburg County Maj. Dan Johnson told the Herald-Journal in the days after the discovery that there were no motives and no suspects.

At that time, Johnson said he wasn’t sure how long the two were dead before being discovered, but it appeared to be within a day or two.

Labeling the deaths as “suspicious, Johnson at the time said, “There are no new developments in the case.”

The county coroner’s office determined both men died of gunshot wounds, and shortly after Sheriff Chuck Wright called on the public to provide answers.

“If they’re going to be so bold to walk into somebody’s house and kill two people, that’s not going to stop them from doing somebody else,” Wright said at the time. “Those are the type of people we want off our street.”

Sixteen years later, the cold case is among 46 cases in Spartanburg County dating back to 1970.

The killings marked the 25th and 26th homicides in Spartanburg County in 2005, eclipsing the previous mark of 25 set in 1998, the Herald Journal reported.
