Wayne County Deputy Killed in Shooting; Suspect Taken Into Custody

A suspect in the fatal shooting of a Wayne County, Illinois deputy, has been taken into custody.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office says the shooting happened around 5:00 a.m. when Deputy Sean Riley was attempting to help a driver on Interstate 64 near .

WCSO says that when another officer got to the scene, Deputy Riley was found dead. Deputy Riley’s squad car was missing from the scene of the shooting and found abandoned along I-64.

Authorities in St. Peters, Missouri, believed that a suspect in a carjacking that happened at a local gas station could be the same suspect involved in the shooting of Deputy Riley.

We’re told the carjacking in St. Peters happened around 7:00 a.m. – about two hours after the shooting of Deputy Riley. Authorities say evidence at the scene of the gas station carjacking in St. Peters linked the suspect seen below to the shooting of Deputy Riley in Illinois.

Around 1:40 p.m., authorities said that one suspect had been taken into custody in connection to the shooting death of Deputy Riley. A second person originally thought to be another suspect in the case turned out to be a victim, according to police.

The suspect’s identity has not been released at this time.
